15 Minute Performance
Standing proudly on a statue plinth is a vintage sound system. As the speakers power up, the public witness a thought provoking performance that charts the story of sound system culture and its importance in the fight for racial equality. Whispered Tales has collaborated with ex Phoenix Dance choreographer Donald Edwards. Two performers appear on and around the sound system responding to the poetic narrative written by Madu Messenger, narrated by Macka B and set to a distinctively Dub soundtrack by Vibronics. The dancers perform African, Caribbean and UK Dub Reggae dance styles culminating in a positively uplifting piece of choreography that the public to advocate for change.
The installation consists of a replica vintage Jamaican-style sound system stack stood upon a statue plinth. Inside are a number of LCD screens, which show a series of animations drawing inspiration from the ground breaking African American painter Aaron Douglas. The sound system alternates between a 15-minute poetic verse written by Madu Messenger, narrated by the reggae legend Macka B and a 15 minute soundtrack featuring oral interviews from some of the most renown names in Dub Reggae.
