Fish Out of Water is a multidisciplinary show blending hip-hip and contemporary dance, live looping and soundscapes from musician Randolph Matthews, and interactive set designs from artists Jyll Bradley and Jonathon Wright.
The show explores migration, belonging and otherness and is inspired by our creative team and audiences’ diversity and multinationalism. Set in an urban environment of bizarre colourful obstacles, the dancers go on a journey, both emotionally and geographically. We see them lost, reaching out to technology to get them through, and we use the plexi glass of the set design as an imagination point that changes form throughout the piece.
The choreography blends hip-hop grooves, responding to live generated music and bringing the narrative to life in a contemporary context. It draws on the dancers individual skills to show the challenges of their journey. The piece is strongly built on the dancers’ openness, personality, connections & relationships with one another and their interaction with the audience. The dancers build a relationship that supports each other and they invite the audience to help them build their home in their new community and welcome everyone in.
