Performed in a bed of soil Rodadoras explores the themes of death and re-birth, cycles of life and a state of emergency around the female body. Through a rhythmical jig of floor work three female dancers roll, fall and slam into the earth; their bodies becoming fully immersed in their surrounding. Shielded behind their hair which is tossed about and flailing, as though a protagonist, the performers are morphed into otherworldly creatures. The show is a display of powerful femininity, sparks curiosity in it’s audience, especially young female viewers who like to climb into the soil pit after each show and try out the moves themselves. Rodadoras is in intimate outdoor contemporary dance performance for a maximum audience of 500 people. It crosses the boundaries of dance and performance art and is set to an original score of Neapolitan folk music.
The work draws from contemporary dance, floor work practices and capoeira, I wanted to create a contemporary dance show which was highly physical, rhythmical and is accessible to the general public but brings attention to the female body under pressure and the constant threat and violence amongst which it exists The relentlessness of the track the instability of the soil and the speed of the movement bring a vulnerability to the performers, even as powerful and strong as they are.
First developed as a scratch show in 2016 as part of East Wall Warm Up with LIFT, East London Dance and Hofesh Shechter Company. In 2018 the show was developed into an outdoor touring work supported by ACE, Deda, DanceXchange, 101.
