Sufi:Zen is an intimate dance theatre experience that unites the stillness of Zen meditation with the rapturous motion of Sufi Dervishes. Evoking a cultural landscape that extends from Persia to Japan, Sufi:Zen exists in a world of contrasts – of ice and fire, entropy and energy, introspection and divine omniscience.
Sufi:Zen is choreographed by Gauri Sharma Tripathi with the support of Jonathan Lunn and Mavin Khoo. It uses dance styles, of kathak and western contemporary techniques set to a score by Shrikanth Sriram. This performance reflects the company’s long-standing reputation for presenting modern perspectives on traditional South Asian dance forms in unusual and distinct spaces.
Originally designed to be performed at dusk, Sufi:Zen is atmospherically lit by a combination of stage lights and natural fire effects.
We are also able to collaborate with environmental arts group Red Earth, who can provide medium-large scale natural fire effects to create an outdoor spectacle.
