Oriol Escursell Domènech started in the world of circus in 2004, at the age of 17, with the group Escarabellos. In 2008 he gets his degree in Physiotherapy and specializes in Physiotherapy for the Performing Arts at CPAE. In 2009 he decides to fully commit to the circus discipline and travels to Buenos Aires to study at IUNA, the Circo Criollo y Circo del Aire. Back in Catalonia, he takes dancing lessons at the Anna Maleras school. In 2010 he goes back into circus at the Torino’s Scuola di Circo Contemporaneo Flic where he specializes in trapeze. Back in Barcelona, he starts his professional career with companies like Nusos de Dansa i Circ (Ateneu de Noubarris), G. Bistaki (Festival d’Aurillac), and Cohdi Harrell, the trapeze artist with whom he developes a research project in New Mexico.
In 2013 he co-founds the company Suitcase Circus with the intention of spreading the circus discipline with courses and workshops. In the meanwhile, he continues developing as a dancer in Catalonia and Belgium, in schools like PARTS, Deltebre Dansa, nunArt Barcelona, la Caldera (Barcelona), Dansecentrumjette, Charleroi Danse or Garage 29 (Brussels).
In 2015 he is part of the company Cligbcn which develops several projects, like the videodance clip 1714, the interdisciplinary El Banquet (by Laura Vilar and Miquel Barcelona), or the videoclip ‘Not there’ by Nacho Melús. He participates as an actor in No feu bromes en l’amor at TNC (Catalonia’s National Theatre). He is part of the cast at Jérome Bel’s The Show Must Go On at Mercat de les Flors, Nullpunkt at Fira Trapezi de Reus (coproduced by Central del Circ and Fira Trapezi de Reus). In 2015 he joins The Amateurs Company to be part of the cast of Un Nou Inici, a work in residency at Nau Ivanow.
In 2016 he collaborates with Panorma Dance Theatre from Switzerland in the development of the projects Balla’m un llibre and Creatures de Vanessa Cook.
He is currently working in the piece EGURRA, awarded with the Premi Delfí Colome 2016 and NAQBA, his first large scale project that will premiere in 2017. He has been nominated in the Premis Zirkòlika awards as Best Emerging Artist both in 2015 and 2016.
