On the Waterfront Dance Festival (2010)

In 2010, XTRAX was commissioned to programme the dance festival ‘On the Waterfront’ in Liverpool.

The event, produced by Walk the Plank, was a great success attracting an audience of 35,000 and feature the very best in outdoor dance; including the large-scale aerial dance spectacular Voala, internationally renowned Senza Tempo, Fractoria Mascaro, Ziya Azazi and leading UK artists, Motionhouse, Prodigal Theatre and a further 18 companies who were booked by XTRAX.

The programme presented a selection of the best outdoor dance and choreographed performance from UK and international companies.

The programme opened with a bang on Friday evening with music and strolling performances leading to the large-scale spectacular from Argentinian aerial company Voala – a breathtaking aerial dance performance that uses a crane to lift the performers high into the air.

Saturday afternoon features a programme of dance and strolling performances including sensational parkour-inspired performance, aerial “bungee” assisted dance, contemporary choreography and acrobatics. Performers were selected from across Europe to represent a range of forms and styles and participatory opportunities was offered by experts selected by Merseyside Dance Initiative.

Saturday evening featured performances from stunning water based choreography from Factoria Mascaro (Spain), whirling dervish Ziya Azazi (Turkey/Germany) and another chance to see the spectacular show from Voala (Argentina)

Sunday afternoon featured strolling entertainment, with the addition of a specially created “Tea Dance”; straight from Blackpool’s famous Ball Room.

XTRAX’s input and consultation into the programming of Liverpool’s On the Waterfront dance weekend was paramount to the event’s success. Their insight and knowledge of the national and international dance scene allowed us to present an event that appealed to a wide demographic with varying or no previous experience of dance events.
