Tollwood GmbH organizes a cultural tent festival in Munich twice a year.
In summer Tollwood festival is held for about 25 days in June/July, in winter the festival starts just before the first Advent Sunday, offering a Christmas market through December 23 and cultural events up to New Year’s Eve. Each year Tollwood has more than 1.5 million visitors.
The first Tollwood Festival took place in summer 1988 at the Olympiapark South. Since 1991 there is a Tollwood Winter Festival, which started out at the so called “Roncalli area”, where you can find now the “Pinakothek der Moderne”, later it took place in “Arnulfpark” and since 2000 established at the Theresienwiese.
From the beginning, the festival has striven to be the image of a multicultural society, which is why tolerance, internationality and openness are the cornerstones of every festival. This is visible at all levels, whether it be the cultural programs or in the structure of the market and the variety of dining offered.
More than 70 percent of all the cultural events are free of charge, while the big theatre and concert events are offered at far below the usual local price.
From the beginning, Tollwood has been a forum for ecology and environmental consciousness. On the one hand, it provides a platform for important issues in the area and, on the other hand, it provides the impetus for ecological projects. Among these are the organic certification of foods at the festival, the campaign “Bio für Kinder”, commitment toward healthier mobile telephony and exemplary CO2 emissions.
