Revived in 2014 Whitley Bay Carnival brings artists together with the community to showcase the best of this vintage seaside town over the late May bank holiday weekend. The walking parade on Saturday features beautifully crafted structures and extravagant costumes. Many local schools and groups get involved with teams of artists working with them to create costumes and dance. Drop in costume & street band sessions welcome all comers in the weeks leading up to Carnival and artists are commissioned to make themed processional pieces. Carnival is two days of outdoor arts, theatre, music and street food with open air stages and arenas, market stalls and vintage seaside attractions from shuggy boats to knobbly knees on the famous Spanish City promenade, golden sands and The Links. The ticketed Saturday night Carnival Ball aims to be ‘like the best family wedding party you never went to’ . The carnival commissions new work.
