Founded in 2001 by Tony Adigun, Avant Garde Dance Company is at the forefront of London’s innovative hip hop/contemporary dance scene. Formerly associate artist at The Place and Studio Wayne McGregor’s Quest Lab, Adigun is a choreographer, director, curator, dancer, educator, and mentor with a razor-sharp eye for dance composition, musicality, and form. His unique dance vocabulary has earned plaudits from the highest echelons of the industry.
The company’s mantra “Innovate Never Replicate” courses through its work, which embraces individuality, and uniqueness.
Avant Garde Dance has performed in the UK and internationally at venues and festivals including: The Place, Breakin’ Convention, Sadler’s Wells, Pavilion Dance, Southbank Centre, The Barbican, DanceXchange, Greenwich Dance, Latitude Festival, British Dance Edition, Greenwich & Docklands International Festival, Brighton Dome, East London Dance at Stratford Circus, Barcelona Festival and Madison Square Garden in New York.
Since 2015, Avant Garde has reached extensive audiences and engaged over 2000 young people in educational opportunities.
Avant Garde’s Most recent outdoor work, entitled Scrum, comes four years after the premier of Adigun’s last touring piece Fagin’s Twist, an adaption of Dickens’ much-loved Oliver Twist. After a UK tour of nearly 200 shows, Fagin’s Twist went on the road to Columbia, Peru, and China, including a sell-out run at the ShangHi International Dance Festival. In three years the show delighted audiences of over
120,000 and garnered significant critical acclaim.
