On Sunday 26 July 2026, Manchester Day, Manchester City Centre UK welcomes Catalan artists as part of this city-to-city cultural exchange.
Manchester’s biggest day of the year gets a Catalan twist for 2026!
Manchester Day promises a distinctly Catalan flavour to the day as performers from Barcelona head to Manchester to join in the festivities, marking the first time also that Manchester has welcomed international performers to join in with the Manchester Day festivities.
It follows Manchester’s Guest City role during Barcelona’s iconic La Mercè festival in September 2025, produced by XTRAX, and co-curated by Without Walls.
The Manchester Day FREE festival programme includes two XTRAX International Commissions:
- The Ultimate Player’s Handbook A UK Premiere – by Manchester’s leading contemporary dance company, Company Chameleon and Barcelona dance duo Clémentine & Lisard
- Bee for Barcelona by carnival arts specialists Global Grooves (MCR) and Catalan artists Pau Reig and Dolors Sans (CAT). Queen Bee Gigante and Worker Bee, two giant puppets, celebrating shared industrial heritage, cultural pride, and artistic exchange.
More Catalan highlights include: Pelat by Joan Catala, a dance, circus and theatre performance, Always Drinking Marching Band, The Hippos by Zum Zum Teatre, Too Much by Elelei Dance Theatre Company and Kamchàtka contemporary street theatre by Kamchàtka. Manchester will also welcome Catalan ‘Griffins’, legendary mythical creature puppets accompanied by Catalan flags in the enormous street-filled community parade.
TS Crew (Hong Kong), XTRAX Associate Artists will also present No Sugar, No Milk.
The Manchester Day 2026 programme is led by Walk the Plank, working internationally with XTRAX, bringing outdoor arts companies from the UK and Spain to Manchester.
