Sonia Sabri Company (SSCo) is a leading UK contemporary South Asian dance and music company. The company creates work relevant to modern audiences, that is inspired by western and eastern cultures, and the rich possibilities that arise when they meet.
Through our dance and music we unearth untold stories, transform lives and create small miracles.
The company has an international reputation for presenting Kathak dance in a contemporary context, without diluting its integrity, as well bringing Kathak into dialogue with other art forms and disciplines, with an increasing interest in making work for the digital realm. SSCo tours nationally and internationally with a repertoire of works for rural community venues through to middle-scale theatre venues, and outdoor festivals e.g. WOMAD, Latitude, Shrewsbury Folk. We are also often commissioned to create bespoke work ranging from TV, theatre, site-specific, outdoors and film.
Sonia Sabri Company explores and brings to the fore aspects of Kathak which are less well known, for example exploring the Sufi and Persian influences within the form and performing with original and rare compositions of Indian music. SSCo believes Kathak is a living artform, which continues to evolve like a language. We seek fresh ways to develop and inform our work by responding to contemporary experience and diverse inspirations. Ideas are introduced through dialogue rather than a fusion of disciplines, challenging dance vocabulary and physical and emotional expression.
Continuing with the quest of reinvention, Artistic Director Sonia Sabri has developed a distinct style ‘Urban Kathak’. Taking inspiration and influence from people and urban settings, this growing vocabulary creates edgy, familiar, and unpredictable works, particularly accessible for young and new audiences.
