Movema celebrates diversity through dance, including professional performance and creating safe spaces for different communities to come together and learn about each other through high-quality arts experiences.
Current touring work includes ‘Taking Flight’ a spectacular 30 min outdoor dance-theatre show
based around 4 characters who are part human, part bird, part flying machine, set in a distopian future.
Inspired by Movema artists’ experiences of migration & informed by refugee and asylum seeker communities with whom we work, ‘Taking Flight’ explores birds’ and humans’ desire for freedom & flight & the role of modern aeronautics to enable this.
Costumes are eye-catching, influenced by the traditions of the countries of origin of each of the birds,Phoenix from Chinese culture, Peacock from Indian culture, Sankofa bird from Ghanaian culture and the Liver bird to represent British/Irish culture.
Commissioned by Dance Consortia North West, SpareParts & NowNorthwich festivals.
